The covered bridge west of Darlington was built while Samuel Marts was a commissioner of Montgomery County. He took his office on December 4, 1865. The other two commissioners were David Long and Taylor Buffington.
The petition for the erection of the bridge was presented by John Manker and John Corbin and signed by William Cox, I.E.G. Naylor, William Milner, Enoch Peacock, John B. Lowman, Jacob Deans, William Greist, Guardianas Booher, Henry Huffman, Ziba Thomas, William S. Wheeler, John J. Manker and John E. Corbin.
On June 13, 1866 the present bridge site was selected, and March 1867, Taylor Buffington was ordered to confer with some practical bridge builder.
Donations totaling $1,585.00 had been made by men of the community and on April 15, 1867 these donations were accepted. The remainder of the money was appropriated by the county commissioners. Richard Epperson was appointed superintendent of the construction and the contract to build the bridge was awarded to Joseph Kress. It was practically finished in 1867 but the approaches and fills were not completed until 1868. It is one of the few remaining covered bridges and was in daily use as the only passage way north west of Darlington across Sugar Creek.
